Parents can potentially delay the onset of eczema symptoms in their child from birth

We worked with AVEENO®, one of Kenvue’s leading skincare brands, to commission a survey of over 3,000 parents in India, China and Indonesia. We aimed to assess their understanding and awareness of AD, the most common form of eczema, and the long-term benefits of adopting early skin health practices to delay the onset of symptoms in their child.

The 2022 Global Report on atopic dermatitis (AD), published by the International League of Dermatological Societies, estimates a staggering 223 million people worldwide endure the daily challenge of living with AD and of that, 43 million are children are between the age of one and four.

Emerging research from an independent clinical study conducted out of the University of Cork suggests that early initiation of daily emollient use in high-risk infants may help to protect the skin barrier which consequently reduces the likelihood of developing AD.

We worked with AVEENO® to commission a survey of parents in India, China and Indonesia. We aimed to assess their understanding and awareness of AD and the long-term benefits of adopting early skin health practices to delay the onset of symptoms in their child.

Here’s what the survey revealed:

  • 92% of parents surveyed were keen to embrace preventative treatments to delay the onset of AD. Yet only one out of four respondents said they would be very likely to use a moisturiser before symptoms appeared, even if they suspected their child was high-risk for AD.
  • Majority of parents surveyed felt that AD most impacted a child’s quality of sleep, with sleep disturbances (45%) and irritability (25%) reported as the top two consequences parents associated with AD.
  • Only 10% of parents surveyed associated low self-esteem with AD, despite many studies highlighting that the deterioration in the condition can negatively impact a child’s psychological health and daily life.

These new insights will be key to helping AVEENO® bridge the gaps to educate more parents on the importance of emollient application in AD management and influence their development of new products that meet the needs of children and parents.
